Useful information and Places of interest in the region of Midões -Tábua, located in the Beira Alta region of Central Portugal. Near Coimbra, in the bowl of the Serra da Estrela mountain (highest point of continental Portugal) Caramulo Mountains and Açor Mountains.
This region has a very rich history of culture and tradition. Historic villages, Schist Villages, Fado music, timeless wool tradition, architecture, world heritage, museums, churches, monuments and castles. Breathtaking natural parks and gardens, there are also several original excursions in the region.

You take the A 1 direction Porto-Coimbra, here you follow direction Viseu on the IP 3 (don’t turn to Oliveira do Hospital!). When you reach Santa Comba Dão you follow the sign Mangualde-Guarda on the IC 12. More or less 1 km further you have the sign Tábua N 234-6 this you follow until Tábua. In Tábua when you past the bridge, you take the second turn out Tábua Este -Midões, than turn left direction Midões. After about 8 km you have a sign Midões-Casal da Senhora, you go to your right. Drive until Midões village and turn right following the blue sign Portugal by Horse. Then follow the yellow horse shoes and wooden signs Portugal by Horse for another 900m. Follow the horseshoes in the direction the horses are walking. The last 500m is a sand path.

Welcome at Quinta da Alegria
You drive down to the sand path, 500 meters down in the valley and earthy colors from the house will appear, the orchard with the stables in the back, the horses and the valley.
You park your car on the parking on your left. The first building is our reception, you can ring the bell or come and look for us. After check-in you can take one of the carts at the reception to take your luggage to your holiday accomodation.
Gastronomy in Portugal
Portugal is famous for its gastronomy and wine. In our region you have a wide range of restaurants from the exquisite cuisine in restaurant “Olea” to the local “tascas”. During your stay at Quinta da Alegria you are guaranteed a local delicious gastronomic experience.
Breakfast
On request we’ll serve you the best breakfast, outside in the sunshine, or inside in your own holiday accommodation. From 9 o’clock we bring a basket with local bread, cheese and meat, homemade jams, juice, milk & coffee, yougurt ect and for the children cornflakes, so you can start your day without worries…
You can also walk to the bakery to have your breakfast or to get fresh bread, eat some lovely cakes, drink a coffee or something else.
At our farm we sell homemade organic jams, honey, olive oil and farm fresh eggs.
Seasonal organic fruit, such as kiwi’s, apples, plums, cherries, Sharon fruit, lemons and oranges are also available in the season. You can pick your own fresh organic herbs in the garden to make tea or to use in your meal.
Lunch & Dinner
In Midões and surrounding (10 km) there is a diversity of many different restaurants for lunch and dinner for example in our own village we have “Midogrelha” with the always cheerful service or “o faisão” is a grill house at walking distance from the accommodation. There is also the magnificant place Quinta moinhos-da-ponte next to a waterfall.
In Oliveira Do Hospital for example we have Restaurant “O Túnel” and Pizzeria “L´artista”.
Tábua has Restaurant “O Toino Moleiro”, Pizzeria “Paposeco” and Restaurant “O agulhas”. In Casal da Senhora at 20 min on foot there is “Quinta da Cerca” where you can have meals with organically grown vegetables from there own garden, they also serve vegetarian food! A more classy restaurant is “Restaurant João Brandão” Quinta da Geia in Aldeia das Dez, they also serve vegetarian dishes.
But, in your kitchen all the cooking utensils are present to make yourself a wonderful meal.
Our small local supermarket “o Manhoso” in Midões has all the ingredients to facilitate your shopping.
On demand we can also bring a basket of organic -biological vegetables to your home. There are big supermarkets like LIDL and Intermarché, at 10 km distance.
One can also go to Oliveira do Hospital (10 km) to the Friday fresh markets or to Tábua (10 km)on Sunday mornings. Here you can browse around and find all sorts of home-grown and locally made and organic products such as vegetables, cheese, meat, fish, etc.

Ecological and Green Information
As a human being, we try our footprint to be as light as possible …
We are a Tripadvisor Greenleader!
We have different containers at the apartments to recycle rubbish and waste, we also have a compost bin.
We use ECOLEAF ecological detergents (Washing-up liquid, Laundry liquid, Fabric softener, Floor soap, all purpose cleaning liquid, …) to protect the environment.
We do not iron our linen!
We do not use a dryer! The sun, wind and in winter time the wood burner dry our linen.
All lights are energy savers.
All electrical equipment are class A or A+ and light bulbs are LED or energy savers.
We do not have electrical equipment that use heating (oven, water boiler, …)
Our Holiday houses and our house are built with local materials (granite, eucalyptus, …)
We used lime paint and natural pigments.
Much of our furniture is recycled.
For heating we use wood stoves that are fed with the wood from trimming the trees.
We do not throw food away … there are plenty of animals at Quinta da Alegria who are very happy with leftovers!

What to do for children
Children and farm holidays in Portugal. We have a lot of space for children to run around and to be mischievous. The animals give a lot of joy to young and old and the valley has many secrets to discover, the crystals path, caves, a little river, the ducks, many frogs, chickens that can be picked up and many more…
In Coimbra you have a place called “little Portugal” where everything is build at the size of children.
You can go Canoeing with O Pioneiro do Mondego with little children from whatever age.

All the holiday houses and apartments have their private garden and little fence on the “risky for little kids” zones.
Our swimmingpool is a biodesignpool, all sides are 45 degrees and it has a beach with low water leavel.

Animals & Nature at the farm
Pets, if well-behaved, are welcome. (because of the free roaming chickens, ducks and cats)
We have 7 dogs:Jef, Loekie, Louis, Mira, Nico, Vera and Fred, also 4 cats (Telma, Moestie, Prince and Cesar) chickens, ducks and 13 horses (Trudy, Lusia, Lola, Quo Vadis, Milo, Gipsy, Linda, Fly, Bonnie, Gaston, Sei-La, Ariza and Dama)
The nightingale sings from April to June, day and night.
There are many plants, birds(hoopoe, woodpecker, goldfinch, European canary…), reptiles (Fire salamanders, pearl lizards, many species of frogs…), insects and other wild life to watch at the holiday farm and in the region.
Important! The dogs and cats of Quinta da Alegria are not allowed in the holiday homes and are not allowed to be fed for their own health. If you have leftovers, we are happy to prepare them for all the dogs and cats.
